The Experience
As you walk up to the Butterfly House, one thing you’ll notice is all of the colorful flowers and exotic plants growing and blooming, and you’ll also see an abundance of sculptures strategically placed along the landscape. Some sculptures are large enough to pose with or even climb upon!
Of course no tranquil setting would be complete without water and fountain features complete with real floating lily pads.
You’ll enjoy calmly meandering through the outdoor section of the Butterfly house while listening to the trickle of water.
You should start to see butterflies outside before entering the building, but the real magic begins when you reach the greenhouse, where over 60 tropical butterfly species live!
Inside the Butterfly House, you’ll enter an educational center, with crawly critters, butterflies on display, and exhibits to learn about the lifecycle of this fascinating insect. Plus, you’ll get your ticket to the arboretum and that’s where you’ll be amazed by butterflies like you’ve never seen before.
On your way out of the tropical conservatory, check out the real butterfly cocoons in the hatchery. Don’t miss the iconic butterfly bench for photo ops hand-crafted from metal. You also won’t want to miss the gift shop, which has some beautiful treasures inside. And if you’re looking for an epic playground for the kids to blow some energy—this butterfly house has it!
Other things to check out while you’re there include:
Sensory Nature Trail
Caterpillar Corner (for toddlers)
Exploration Station
Emerson Theater (short films)
Know Before You Go
Here are some things to keep in mind when planning your trip to the Butterfly House in the Missouri Ozarks. Normal hours are 10 am to 4 pm, Tuesday thru Sunday (closed Mondays). Here’s how to get there:
You’ll want to avoid bringing a stroller if possible. Instead, opt for a baby sling or carrier so that there’s plenty of walking space for everyone and wheeling space for those who can’t get around without them!
The Butterfly House is located inside Faust Park, which is also home to a hand-carved indoor carousel that you can ride for $2/person. The park is also home to some interesting historic buildings.
As an indoor, outdoor, and greenhouse experience, you’ll probably want to dress in layers! One minute you’ll be chilly, the next you’re just right, and then things get heated in the hot and humid conservatory!
Is the Butterfly House Worth it?
At only $5 for children under 12, free for toddlers under 3, and $8 for adults, it’s a no brainer! A family of four can enjoy this budget-friendly attraction together for $32 or less.
The great thing about the Butterfly House is that there is no problem with sensory overload and you won’t feel overwhelmed trying to get it all done like some other places. Here, things run at a slower pace and you can take your time and still see it all.
Since there’s not a whole lot to do other than walk around and take in the beautiful scenery, learn a little, take some photos, and let the kids play—you can relax and enjoy the experience! It’s one of those places that you can’t leave without at least one “wow!” moment.
