Hangar Kafe: A Unique, Aviation-Themed Dining Experience in Southwest Missouri

Updated: Feb 21

Nestled 40 minutes from Springfield, Missouri—in the middle of nowhere in the Ozarks is a neat little diner called the Hangar Kafe. As the name hints, it’s positioned next to several aircraft hangars. Quaintly, the Kafe itself even resembles a hangar, built inside an insulated semicircle structure. If you’re looking for great food and a cool dining experience that your kids will love, keep reading.

We discovered the Hangar Kafe while on an impromptu skydiving trip to the Ozark Skydive Center. But this place is not just for pilots or skydivers. They have GREAT food, friendly staff, and a unique angle.

What’s So Special about Hangar Kafe?

The kafe is just in front of the runway that small aircraft use to take off and land. That means that you will likely witness several plane departures and landings while you dine. There’s ample outdoor seating for everyone to get a good look. Plus, you might even catch the skydivers if you time it right (Saturdays & Sundays).

If you’re an antique car buff, you might also get a kick out of the museum of old trucks they’ve got sitting behind the outdoor seating. Inside, the place is decorated with model planes hanging from the ceiling and a runway on the floor. While you wait for your food, you can watch a continuous stream of up-close and personal skydive videos captured by the Ozark Skydive Center next door.

If you never considered skydiving before, by the time you leave this kafe, you may have a different mindset. We watched one clip of a lovely lady skydiving who must have been 80+ years old! It was incredible.

The Food

We tried the fish sandwich and fried pickles and the food was fantastic. Here’s what we noticed:

  • Generous Portions

  • Reasonable Pricing

  • Homemade Desserts

  • Fast & Friendly Service

Our server also mentioned they serve steak on Fridays and Saturdays. Don’t depend on the menu listed online since at the time we wrote this it was missing most of the items!

Check out the food & menu (as of August 2023) below:

There’s a decent selection of comfort foods like pork tenderloin, chicken fried steak, hot beef, and fried fish. Plus there’s a modest selection of soups, salads, sandwiches, and burgers.

The kids menu is perfect for picky eaters, featuring:

  • Cheeseburger

  • Chicken nuggets

  • Chicken strips

  • Grilled Cheese

  • Corn Dogs

  • Sides: French Fries or Mac n Cheese

They’ve also got homemade pie that looked delicious, but we didn’t try any during this trip. (We will next time!). We took a giant cinnamon roll to-go that ended up being ok, but not the best I’ve ever had.

The Hours

Call before you go to verify hours. We read online that the kafe was only open until 3pm, but found out while we were at the skydiving center that they were open til 8pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

Is the Hangar Kafe Worth it?

Absolutely! The Hangar Kafe in the Ozarks is such a fun and unique spot to take the kids for lunch or dinner and the food is outstanding. Just be sure to call ahead to verify hours so you don’t waste a trip. We will most definitely return with the whole family next time we’re in the area.
