Founded in 1879, Eureka Springs was born a tourist town. Stories of travelers coming from near and far to bathe in the healing springs dispersed throughout the area date back to early Native American tribes.

But it wasn't until the late 1800s that the area began to resemble a city. The rugged terrain was difficult to travel, but as more and more people began setting up tents alongside the mountain, the earliest forms of infrastructure began to appear.

The tent city evolved into dirt roads and primitive wooden structures. Those were eventually replaced by better wooden structures and limestone roads lined with limestone retaining walls.

In 1886, The Crescent Hotel was commissioned by the mayor to formally establish Eureka Springs as a luxury travel and tourism spot. This majestic estate sits on top of the mountain with roads winding down the hilltop in seemingly every direction.

Today, Eureka Springs is still alive and well with local tourism. Let's take a look at what this unique city in the Ozarks has to offer.
